Police: Suicide blasts kill 13 in Ramadi

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Suicide car bombings at a market and at a police checkpoint in Ramadi killed 13 people and wounded 35 others Monday, police said.
Authorities initially reported a higher number of casualties but later said the tally was incorrect.
The first car bombing erupted about noon at a market area in northern Ramadi, said Gen. Tariq al Thibaw, the Ramadi police chief.
About 10 minutes later, a second car bomb exploded at a police checkpoint about a mile (2 kilometers) away, the chief said.
There was no breakdown on the number of casualties from each attack.
Ramadi is in Anbar province, about 70 miles (110 kilometers) west of Baghdad.
Samarra blast kills 5 Iraqi soldiers
A roadside bomb struck an Iraqi army vehicle Monday in Samarra, killing five soldiers, a security official said.
The Shiite city north of Baghdad has been singled out by the Islamic State of Iraq, which warned Samarra police last week they would be targeted in attacks.
Islamic State of Iraq is the Sunni insurgent umbrella group that includes al Qaeda in Iraq.
Samarra officials had imposed a curfew, which was lifted Sunday but quickly reinstated with additional checkpoints after a suicide car bomber killed 12 police officers and two U.S. soldiers. Eleven Iraqi police officers were wounded in the Sunday attack, the U.S. military said.
A Samarra hospital also fell victim to the Sunday attack and is suffering from a water shortage and power outage.
The U.S. military called in reinforcements to help secure the area. Two U.S. soldiers en route to the area were wounded when insurgents opened fire with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades.
Bombs erupt in, around Baghdad

Southeast of Baghdad, two more people were killed by a roadside bomb in the town of Madaen, an Iraqi Interior Ministry source said.
In central Baghdad, a roadside bomb detonated in Bab al-Muadham about 1:30 p.m., killing two civilians and wounding three others, a police official said.
Five more people were killed when a mortar round slammed into Bayaa in southwestern Baghdad, the official said.
Two people were wounded in the Bayaa attack, according to the official.
On Sunday, a bomb inside a parked car exploded in a market in the Bayaa neighborhood, killing 33 people and wounding 74 others, an Interior Ministry official said.
U.S. commander wounded
A senior U.S. commander was evacuated from Iraq after being shot in the leg, two military sources said Sunday.
Col. Billy Don Farris, commander of the 2nd Brigade of the Army's 82nd Airborne Division, is expected to recover, the sources said. He was evacuated to receive treatment, the sources said.
Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, gave Farris a Purple Heart before he was evacuated, the sources said.
